Values are the attitudes that shape and mould the individual, and govern their behaviour. At King's College, the development of personal values and principles underpins everything we do.
In classroom, House and Chapel, field and stage, we teach our students how to interact with each other and we give them the foundations on which character is built. We encourage our students to grow towards adulthood with respect, integrity and honesty. They learn to exercise leadership, initiative and self-discipline, leaving King's with the necessary experience and skills for balanced future lives and careers.
Values are instilled at House and School level and, when our students reach year 12, they all undertake a series of leadership seminars. Those who demonstrate greater readiness for responsibility are given further intensive training for House and School Prefectship.
Students from throughout New Zealand are drawn to King's by its reputation and standards. Every year, we also admit a number of international students from around the Pacific, Asia and Europe, both expatriates and foreign nationals. By creating a diverse mix, we introduce our students to greater multicultural understanding and tolerance of difference.
At the heart of the King's value system is our Memorial Chapel. Its rich timbers and stunning leadlight windows betoken a place of solace and worship. At least twice weekly, students attend services there and, as part of the College's pastoral care system, the Chaplains are available for the counselling of students and parents alike. At King's, Christianity is the template through which we reinforce core values to our students. Whilst we are Anglican in our worship pattern, we are ecumenical in spirit and we welcome all faiths and creeds.
Two Chaplains reside at the College and their role is to administer the Chapel and teach Religious Studies and Life Skills. Our Life Skills study programme prepares students for life outside the College and, throughout their time at King's, students are encouraged to challenge misconceptions and prejudices. Our Chaplains are fully involved in pastoral care and community work inside and outside the College. The services they run are both dignified and varied, with student involvement as Sacristans at Holy Communion and also in regular House services. The Chapel is used for other major occasions including Confirmation, Anzac and Carol Services.
