Admissions Procedure

Introduction

King’s College wishes to ensure that the student population of the College is such that the best possible outcomes are achieved for all students. In considering applications for admission the College, the following principles will guide the policy and processes.

•    The recognition of individual merit.
•    Respecting prior connections with the College.
•    Endeavouring to reflect the composition of New Zealand society as a whole.
•    Ensuring that the College retains a significant proportion of boarding students.
•    Supporting the College’s Anglican and Christian heritage.
•    Honouring our vision:
“To provide the best all-round education that it is possible to obtain”.

The College reserves the right at all times to determine who will be admitted to the College, in accordance with these principles.

Categories

Students will be considered for admission to the College in the following three categories, in order.

a)    Category 1 – Scholarship and bursary winners

King’s College offers a range of scholarships and bursaries, recognising excellence in a number of fields, as well as taking into account need in some instances.  In general, scholarship winners will have priority over other categories of students at any given year level.

b)    Category 2 – Applicants with prior connection to the College

The second category of students to be considered will be those with a prior connection with the College, including the following groups:

•    Children or other direct relatives of Old Collegians, including younger siblings.
•    Younger siblings of current students.
•    Children of staff members.
•    Former students of the College.

Where there are more applicants from Category 2 than there are places at a particular year level, the criteria outlined below for Category 3 students will come into effect.

Although Category 2 applicants are given priority, this does not mean that every such candidate will automatically gain entry to King’s, as the College needs to be confident that they will be able to succeed in this environment.

c)    Category 3 – All other candidates

Once places have been offered to applicants in the first two categories, all other candidates will be considered.  Even if there are more places than candidates, not all candidates will automatically gain entry to the College, as we must be confident that they will be able to succeed in the King’s environment.

Where there are more candidates than there are places available at any year level, the following criteria will be taken into account, to determine who is admitted:

•    The merit of the individual.
•    The date of application.
•    Providing a student body that is broadly representative of New Zealand society.
•    Admitting students from a range of schools.
•    The need of the family and/or the student him/herself.
•    Any other relevant family circumstances.
•    Association with King’s School.
•    Whilst welcoming people of all faith backgrounds, taking into account our Anglican and
      Christian heritage.
•    Transfer from a similar school either within New Zealand or from overseas.

It should be noted that these criteria are not listed in order of priority or importance, and that some or all of these criteria may be taken into account in consideration of any individual.  Particular circumstances at any given time may result in greater weight being given to different criteria.

Process

The Director of Admissions will oversee all aspects of the admissions process, ensuring that applicants are kept fully informed about the various steps in the admissions procedure.  Details of this process are provided elsewhere.
