Facilities and Services

Physical facilities

The Library and Information Centre occupies the lower floor of the Centennial Centre building. It is available for class bookings, for individual student use before and after school and during break times, and for student study during Evening Prep times.

Bookable areas - (Teacher bookings are made through the Intranet)
There are two bookable teaching areas for class curriculum-related work:
- the Fiction and reading area section (with six table set-ups for groups of eight + access to 5 Mac computers + comfortable armchair seating for another 16 students);
- the Non-Fiction section (with individual study desks for 29 students, 15 of these with Mac computers).

Resources
The Library and Information Centre has 17,000+ resources available for use. These include a wide range of non-fiction resources to support student learning programmes (as well as general interest reading), and a comprehensive collection of fiction books for general reading (with a focus on literature for Young Adults). The Fiction collection includes a good range of short story volumes as well as a selection of sophisticated picture books for Young Adults. Back issues of journals/magazines (those listed on the catalogue) are available for issue in the same way as books.

Desk Copies
Desk Copies are available from the Librarian for use in the library. They are shelved behind the desk at teacher request, so that students may have shared access to key resources.

Borrowing
Books are issued on loan for 3 weeks - the date for return is stamped on the Date Due slip inside the book's back cover at the time of issue. The loan is renewable, provided the book is brought to the Issue Desk for this purpose, and provided also that it has not requested by any other student. Students may have up to 10 items on loan at any one time.

Magazines

Magazines

A wide range of magazines is displayed behind the Issue Desk for borrowing to read in the library outside class times. Students must leave ID cards at the Issue Desk when borrowing a magazine, and retrieve their card when they return the magazine. The latest copies of magazines (the ones on display) are not available for general issue - they are for reading in the library only. Magazines can be used by students in class time only when their use is part of the set library research work.

Newspapers
The New Zealand Herald is available Monday-Friday - for reading in the library. The Sunday Star-Times is also available in the Library each Monday. Newspapers are not available for loan. Other local and international newspapers are also available at the Issue Desk. Please return them afterwards.

IT facilities

The Library & Information Centre provides 22 Mac computers connected to the King's College network for student use. They give access to the Internet (for web, e-mail and database use - EPIC, Blackboard, ScholarNet), to computer production software (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and to printing services. Students with laptops can access the network via Ethernet or wirelessly. Two scanners are also available, and a colour photocopier provides colour and black/white copying as well as computer colour printing services (both these services are debited from student ID charge-cards).
