The academic performance, in general, in 2007 has been excellent for both NCEA and CIE. King's College students should be very proud of their achievements with many students excelling at the highest level, especially in CIE where some students have been placed first in the world or first in New Zealand.
The majority of our Year 11 students sit the IGCSE examinations and 43% of all grades were A’s (80% or higher) with 97% of all grades being a D or better (D grade is 50-59%).
Jonathan CHOIE (Marsden) and John CHEN (Peart) scored 100% in English Literature and both were first equal in the world; an astonishing performance! John gained another first in the world with his 98% in Physics.
George SHAND (Peart) was placed first in New Zealand in Geography, Stephen MACKERETH (Marsden) (from Year 10) was first in New Zealand in Mathematics and John Chen produced yet another outstanding performance and was first in New Zealand in Biology.
Our NCEA Level 1 results weren’t quite as good as previous years, however Adrian DENNIS (Marsden) gained 142 credits from a maximum of 144, and this represents sustained academic endeavour of the highest quality through out the year. William BAYLY (Selwyn), Daniel SPRATT (Selwyn), Harrison SCOTT (Peart) and Timothy SUTHERLAND (Major) each scored above 130 credits and again, these students are to be congratulated for excellent academic endeavour during 2007.
CIE AS Levels, taken by the majority of Year 12 and 13 students and which contribute significantly to University Entrance, are excellent. In fact, in 2007 the results were the best ever! Jonathan Choie and John Chen (both in Year 11) scored 100% in Mathematics and were first equal in the world. Benjamin PATERSON (Major), in Computer Studies, Rory SUMPTER (School), History of Art and Dana WALKER (Middlemore), Economics, were each placed first in New Zealand.
At Year 12, 31 students each gained at least 4 A grades and will be awarded Full Academic Colours in a subsequent College assembly. Further to this, 96% of Year 13 leavers gained University Entrance using CIE as their main qualification.
NCEA Level 2 taken by 51 Year 12 students gained the best results that the College has produced to date. 82.4% of all these students gained their Level 2 Certificates.
Molly ANDERSON (Middlemore) had the highest number of credits with 124, and Anthony SCHULTZ (Parnell) and Michael BANKS (Peart) each gained at least 120 credits.
At Year 13, 53 students had NCEA Level 3 as their main qualification for entry into University. The University Entrance success rate at 79.2% was slightly lower than the previous year, although 83% gained their Level 3 Certificates. Despite the University Entrance rate being lower there were some terrific individual performances from Henry CAULTON (Peart), Jack WILSON (School), Simon KIRK (Major), Christopher BALDWIN (School), Katie ASH (Taylor) and Kylie JACOBSEN (Taylor). All of them gained more than 100 credits. Galen BECK-JAFFURS (Parnell) and Marcus BROWN (Peart) gained all excellences in Art Design; another outstanding effort!
CIE A Levels are taken by our top academics in Year 13. These results were also good. Melissa LEE (Taylor) and Howe MAO (School) each gained 5 A level A grades - a first for the College. Katy BERGSTROM (Taylor) and Victor LIU (Peart) gained 4 A level A grades, and a further 7 students each gained 3 A level A grades. A total of 15 students have qualified for the Academic Honours Board for gaining at least 3 A level A grades.
Finally, the overall University Entrance rate for all school leavers in 2007 was 91.5%. That is, combining CIE and NCEA together. This is our best performance since the finish of Bursary in 2003 and in that year the success rate was 91.6%.
The College is very proud of these results which represents many hours of sustained work of the highest quality by both students and teachers.
